Robert D. Carman is an American Childrens author whose storytelling is rooted in the quiet beauty of rural life and the timeless values of kindness, belonging, and compassion. His debut book, A Lamb Named Number 101, is a tender reflection of his own childhood memories growing up on a working farm, where every animal had a story and every day carried its own small wonder. One of his fondest memories was of a gentle lamb who, having no other lambs to play with, found companionship among the farm dogs—a simple but powerful lesson in acceptance and love that now lives on in his writing.
Raised in the wide-open landscapes of Northern California, Robert grew up on a large family farm that produced alfalfa hay, barley, wheat, oats, and sugar beets. The days began before sunrise and ended well after sunset, filled with the steady rhythms of milking dairy cows, feeding pigs and chickens, tending to the animals, and caring for a lively household of farm cats, along with two faithful dogs- a border collie and a springer spaniel. These early years shaped not only his strong work ethic, but also his deep appreciation for the simple, honest beauty of farm life.
Robert earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics from the University of California at Davis in 1970, the same year he received his Army commission as a Second Lieutenant through the ROTC program. His sense of duty and leadership would carry him through six years with the Minnesota National Guard and twenty-two years in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he rose to the rank of Colonel in Field Artillery before retiring in 1998.
Throughout his professional life, Robert has worked closely with the agricultural community he knew so well. He spent years with a large Midwestern grain company buying and selling farm products, later becoming a grain and hay broker in Northern California. Since 1987, he has also built a successful career as a mortgage broker and supervisor, helping families achieve stability and security - values that echo throughout his stories.
Robert married his college sweetheart, Christine, and together they have built a loving family that includes two sons Rob and Michael, a daughter-in-law, Cassandra, and two cherished grandsons, Lincoln and Bennett.
Today, Robert brings all of these life experiences- his childhood on the farm, his years of service, and his devotion to family-into the gentle, heartfelt stories he shares with young readers. Through his writing, he invites children everywhere to discover that , like his little lamb, every heart deserves to be seen, loved, and valued.
